The latest series of Throwback Thursday cards is releasing just in time for the 4th of July and in the spirit of honoring America, this week’s six cards use the 1955 Topps All American football card design.

The 1955 Topps All American football cards are among the most collectible and lauded football sets of all time. Coming in at 100 cards (checklist in the link above) with a large number of short prints, the set features some of the biggest names of the sport’s formative years.

It is not uncommon to find a number of these cards for sale on online auctions and card consignment shops and with the large number of short prints (and a couple errant cards) they can fetch a nice chunk of change. In fact, in June of 2016 a grade nine card #100 (Fats Henry, short print, rookie card) sold for $2,905 and the Four Horsemen card regularly sells for over $1,000.

For the June 30, 2016 Throwback Thursday release, Topps has chosen six iconic baseball players who also served in the United States armed forces. Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson, Stan Musial, Duke Snider, Warren Spahn, and Ralph Kiner are all given the throwback treatment with a colorized photo layered above a black and white “action shot”. Just like the cards they pay homage to, each card features a team logo in an upper corner and the player’s name and position on the bottom. While the original 1955 Topps All American cards were a mix of landscape and portrait images, all six cards in this throwback are landscaped.

As with all of Topps’ Throwback Thursday sets, these cards will only be available for a week and through the Topps website. Final print runs are available the following week. It has become commonplace to find Throwback Thursday cards on the secondary market, oftentimes prior to distribution, but print counts have settled in the 750 packs range since the first six were released.
