1955 Topps All American Football Checklist

1955 Topps All American Football established an enormous leap forward for football cards and has become one of the most iconic trading card products of all time.

The set, which is the first Topps set to feature short print cards, measures 1/8 inch longer on each side than modern cards and was sold as single cards, nine packs, and 22 packs.

The checklist is a modest 100 cards (1955 Topps Baseball was over 200 cards), probably in part because Topps did not actually have a license to produce professional football cards. That said, nearly 20% of the cards feature future Hall of Fame players including the rookie cards for Mel Hein, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Benny Friedman, Bruiser Kinard, Ace Parker, Don Hutson, and Fats Henry.

Two cards in this set (#14 and #21) have printing errors which were later corrected.

It is possible to piece together a full set via eBay for fairly cheap if condition is of little importance but highly graded cards regularly sell for hundreds of dollars. A PSA-2 of the famous “Four Horsemen” card sold for $72 in 2019, the same week a PSA-8.5 sold for $1,500 after 48 bids.

As a historic set within the hobby and a groundbreaking set for Topps and football cards in general, the small checklist make this a worthwhile set to collect if for no other reason than to say you own it.
