1950 Topps License Plates trading cards — also known as Auto Magic or Stop ‘n Go — were released in pairs, perforated in the middle. The set contains 100 different cards though the numbering stops at 75 because cards 26-50 all contain doubles. For example, #26 can be either Washington or Michigan on the front but the reverse of both cards is the same.
Cards 1-25 and 51-75 all contained a trivia question relevant to the state whose license plate is presented on the front of the card. There was a strip covering the answer, which was a color painting, that needed to be scratched off to reveal. The reverse of cards 26-50 were simply cars with the caption, “name this car” where the trivia question is on the other cards. It’s almost as if the middle part of this checklist is completely different from the beginning and end.
Because these cards were meant to be separated and scratched, finding mint, in-tact samples can be incredibly difficult and the numbering scheme may make it a little bit confusing, too.
