1951 Bowman Baseball Checklist

1951 Bowman Baseball cards feature a simple design with 324 color reproductions of real player photographs. Of the 324 cards included in this checklist, the final 81 cards are considered short-prints and can be much more difficult to find in top quality.

The checklist for this set includes 72 more cards than 1950 Bowman Baseball and continued a trend of expanding checklist lengths. This was the largest Bowman checklist to date and would be matched in 1952 as their largest collections of their 1940s and 1950s run. The cards themselves also measured a slightly larger dimension, moving closer to the current standard of 3 1/2″ x 2 1/2″.

The design of the card fronts is worthy of note as it is the first series by Bowman to include the player’s names on the front of each card. Many cards from 1950 included names but not the complete checklist.

Nearly a third of this checklist is comprised of rookie cards including Hall of Fame inductees Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays.

Cards were sold with a stick of bubble gum in packs of one for a penny or packs of six for a nickel.
