The 25 card set of 1898 Wills Conundrums trading cards offer punny riddles that only the young smoker of 1898 could appreciate. Each card front features an illustration and a riddle question with the answer printed on the back of the card.

There are variations to the card backs with some cards offering an album to collectors and others printed in different ink colors meaning a completist will have more than 25 cards to track down for this collection.

This set is among the first of many trading card sets distributed in Wills tobacco products for decades.

1898 Wills Actresses trading cards were distributed in packs of Wills cigarettes and were among the first of a long line of card releases from the company.

Every card features a popular actress of the time alongside a card suit. Card backs were all identical designs just like a playing card set.

These cards can be tough to find and a complete set is likely to cost several hundred dollars and they are rarely sold as a complete collection.

1916 Wills Merrie England trading cards showcase the wardrobes and occupations of Old England. Unlike most Wills sets, these cards aren’t numbered individually but the card backs do confirm that there are 40 cards in the set.

The artwork on each card is just a character in full costume and a caption that lists his occupation. The drawings were done by John Hassall and colored for this set.

As far as Wills sets go, this one seems to be a bit obscure and tracking down a high quality set may be difficult.

1916 Wills Military Motors trading cards highlighted the finest machines in the British army during World War I. This set of 50 trading cards was distributed in packs of Wills cigarettes and each card comes in two different versions. One version includes the text, “Passed for publication by the Press Bureau 21-9-16” on the bottom border of the card and the other version was released without that text.

Each card front featured a full-color illustration and the back of the card gave a detailed description of the vehicle presented on the front. Collectors should beware that a reprint of this set was released in 1994 but the reprint set only has the “Passed for publication…” variant.

1938 Wills Air Raid Precautions trading cards were just one of several such sets released by the Imperial Tobacco company in England. This same set was also released under the Ogden and Churchman brand of cigarettes at the encouragement of the English government.

The set was released in the early days of World War II. Though Germany’s invasion of Poland wasn’t until 1940, much of Asia was at war and the UK government clearly saw the writing on the wall as these types of sets were widely released and officially endorsed by government officials.

A reprint of the Ogden branded set was released in 1999 so collectors should be wary when purchasing.

1928 Wills Cinema Stars were a British release over two 25-card series. Cards were distributed in packs of Wills’ Cigarettes.

Each series is individually numbered but card backs do include a “1st Series” or “2nd Series” designation which makes it easier to keep straight.

This set remains fairly common and a great entry into tobacco cards as its price point is very accessible.
