Batman the Animated Series is one of the most influential cartoons of its time and brought the entire Gotham universe to a generation of fans who were too young to watch Tim Burton’s telling of the story. Funko is releasing a series of vinyl figures inspired by the groundbreaking television series in November 2016.
The importance and impact of Batman the Animated Series (BTAS) can still be felt over 20 years after the show ended production. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, as the voices of Batman and Joker respectively, have become the gold standard for voicing these characters and they continue to appear in television, animated films, and video games voicing these characters. Further, Harley Quinn, who has become one of the most popular characters in the DC Universe, appeared on this series before ever appearing in a comic, video game, or movie.
Decidedly darker and grittier than any comic-based cartoon before it, BTAS was a stylistic masterpiece that is able to remain timeless and watchable by new generations of Bat fans. The series ran from 1992 to 1995 and only produced 85 episodes (latter episodes were titled The Adventures of Batman and Robin) but still manages to appear on several lists as one of the top animated programs of all time, often ranking in the top five.
Funko is adding the six new character designs to their long established Heroes line of figures which is devoted to DC based characters. A full checklist for the Heroes line can be found under the tab at the top of this page but the characters released in the Batman the Animated Series subset are as follows:
- 152 – Batman
- 153 – Robin
- 154 – Batgirl
- 155 – The Joker
- 156 – Harley Quinn
- 157 – Poison Ivy
Funko is also including designs inspired by the series in their popular Dorbz collection. As of release date, there appear to be no variants or retail exclusives for these figures.
