From 1982 to 1988, Mattel dominated the imagination of millions of children with their Masters of the Universe action figure line featuring He-Man and dozens of other characters. An all around media giant, He-Man and the large cast of ancillary characters were a massive toyline, popular television cartoon, comic book (as well as the issues included with the action figures), video games, and a live-action motion picture.

There have been several reboots to the franchise over the years in virtually every medium except live-action movies with varying degrees of success but this original line of action figures remains popular among collectors. Mattel has released several “adult collectible” figures to commemorate the designs and aesthetics of the original Masters of the Universe line which have become popular on the secondary market and comic book conventions.

In recent years it has become a popular hobby among collectors as well as artists to paint and enhance the Castle Grayskull playsets in various fashions including hyper-realistic or surrealist.
